Megaphone function: Teslas now sound the environment

Tesla’s disaster with games that the driver can enjoy while driving is still fresh in the memory, as the American electric car pioneer is already providing the next dubious example of in-car entertainment. Because with the latest software update, newer Tesla models are turning into rolling megaphones, as reported by the electric car news portal Elektrek.

According to this, Tesla delivered a software update for Christmas that enables the driver to transmit sounds from the interior of the vehicle to the outside. The driver can say something and the Tesla plays the driver’s words through the built-in external loudspeakers outside the vehicle.

The prerequisite for this is a newer Tesla. Because the corresponding external speakers are only installed in the Teslas from model year 2019. Its actual purpose is to emit a sound that warns pedestrians and other road users that a Tesla is approaching. Because of the lack of engine noise, you cannot hear a slowly moving Tesla.

Before Tesla enabled voice transmission from inside to the outside with the latest software update that has now been delivered, the so-called boombox function was already able to play up to five previously recorded tones via the external speakers. However, real-time transmission of speech has not been possible until now.

The new function can be found in the boombox menu on the touchscreen. There you tap on the new “Megaphone” button and then you can fill the area around the vehicle with the interior noises.

In the Twitter demo, however, the sound output sounds distorted and has an echo effect. It is not clear whether this is caused by the situation on the ground.

It is not known whether the new “megaphone function” will also make it to Germany.
