Meghan Markle: she almost wore Diana’s tiara at her wedding but… Elizabeth II intervened


To thwart the plans with grace, she was the queen. Friday, November 24, Daily Express reported a royal anecdote, straight out of Prince Harry’s Memoirs, Spare. At the dawn of the latter’s marriage to the ex-Suits actress, the sisters of Prince Harry’s mother, Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale, offered the future Duchess of Sussex to borrow one of the tiaras of Diana for her wedding. A nice touch that touched a lot William’s brother. But that was without counting the intervention of the Queen herself.

If the royal couple had hastened to accept this offer constituting a beautiful tribute to Harry’s late mother; Queen Elizabeth obviously had other plans in mind. And her own way of achieving her goals. In fact, Harry’s grandmother was quick to invite the couple to a private meeting with her at Buckingham Palace, a few days before the nuptials. Once there, it was not without surprise that the couple discovered five tiaras belonging to the Queen and selected by her, in preparation for the wedding.

“It was an extraordinary morning”

On site, a jewelry expert, an eminent historian and the Queen’s dresser, Angela Kellywere present to assist the couple in their choice. An elegant way for the Queen to force the hand of Meghan and Harry, who set their sights on an Art Deco style tiara, given to Queen Mary as a wedding gift in 1393. Although it was difficult for the couple to avoid this invitation, Prince Harry nevertheless has lasting memories of it, as he testifies in his book : “It was an amazing morning. We walked into Grandma’s private dressing room, right next to her bedroom, a space I had never been in […] Each tiara was more dazzling than the last.”
