Tens of thousands of private sector employees, civil servants, retirees and high school students demonstrated on Thursday to demand salary increases. In Paris, despite a sparse procession, the union leaders were delighted that the subject was finally broached by the presidential candidates.
Great cause, small procession. With its few thousand people (20,000, according to the CGT) who wisely paraded from Bastille to Bercy, the Parisian demonstration for wages and purchasing power organized this Thursday at the call of several employee organizations (CGT, FO, Solidaires, FSU) will not be remembered as a great show of force. The social terrain was however conducive to a mobilization of magnitude, given the number of ongoing conflicts in multiple companies and professional branches against a background of inflation and lack of recognition.
Finally, the teachers mobilized for a third Thursday in a row against the Minister of National Education will have ensured a good part of the animation, to the rhythm of slogans like “Jean-Michel Blanquer, health disaster”.
