NBA: “Don’t come back”, the Spurs’ questionable musical choice during the tribute to Tony Parker

At halftime of the match between the Spurs and the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday evening, the San Antonio franchise paid tribute to Tony Parker, emblematic player of the Texan team between 2002 and 2018. But a musical choice, rather clumsy, provoked strong reactions on social networks.

It was in a room totally committed to his cause, in which he founded his legend across the Atlantic, that Tony Parker made his return on Sunday evening. The AT&T Center in San Antonio will have seen the French basketball player become one of the emblematic players of the Texan franchise, in which he played more than 1,200 games and won four NBA titles. Inducted into the All of Fame last April, a sort of pantheon of American basketball, “TP” was therefore in the spotlight this Sunday at halftime of the match between the Spurs and the New Orleans Pelicans. His jersey was once again removed, that is to say hung from the ceiling of the room, but this time enriched with the words “All of Fame”.

After the broadcast on giant screens of his speech given on August 12 in Springfield, Connecticut, where the All of Fame is based, the former captain of the France team took the floor to address a public that has acclaimed him so much for more than 15 years. “I’ve been very nostalgic lately. It’s nice to revisit those memories, and you guys are by far the best fans in the world. Thank you for your support. You’ve all adopted me. San Antonio is my home and the will always remain. Thank you very much,” he said.

“Get your stuff, go home.”

Everything was going as planned until an unexpected song rang out in the Spurs room. It was the hit by French rappers Gradur and Heuss l’Enfoiré, entitled “Ne reviens pas” and whose lyrics “Don’t come back, take your things, go home” do not seem very appropriate when paying tribute to one of the icons of the franchise.

Another false note of the evening: the bitter defeat of San Antonio against the Pelicans (110-146) despite a good Victor Wembanyama (17 points, 13 rebounds). The Spurs, who ended their streak of 18 consecutive defeats by beating the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night, fell back into their ways and remained stuck in 15th and last place in the Western Conference.
