Netflix: Denzel Washington steals the role of his dreams from Vin Diesel!

Denzel Washington will reunite with his favorite director Antoine Fuqua during the filming of a historical fiction produced by Netflix!

For 20 years, Vin Diesel has only dreamed of this role. Since the beginning of the 2000s, the star of Fast & Furious has wanted to play the famous Hannibal Barca, general of the armies of Carthage, in a film trilogy.

Already in 2013, on the occasion of the inauguration of his star on Hollywood Boulevard, the latter wondered at our microphone if this honor did not come too early in his career. “I haven’t even been able to film my Hannibal Barca trilogy yet!”

Unfortunately, Vin Diesel’s dream will come true… but with another actor in the role of the memorable character, whose conquests at the head of his army of tens of thousands of soldiers make him one of the greatest military strategists of the story.

Our colleagues from Deadline reveal that a biopic will soon see the light of day, with Denzel Washington in the lead role.

Once the American actor has finished filming Gladiator 2 (production of which should resume within a few weeks), the latter will reunite with his favorite director Antoine Fuqua for this ambitious epic.

The two men have collaborated on numerous occasions, notably on Training Day (which earned Denzel the Oscar for Best Actor) and the Equalizer trilogy. Hannibal will therefore be the sixth film that they will shoot together.

A long-standing project for Denzel Washington

The project to see the iconic American actor lend his features to Hannibal dates back many years – but at the time, he did not want to engage in projects that would take him away from his children for too long.

The film’s screenplay is currently being written by John Logan, the screenwriter of Gladiator and Skyfall. Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua are also involved in the project as producers, but we currently have no information on when filming will begin.

The Hannibal film will therefore not be available on Netflix before 2025 – in the best case scenario.
