New design, but no price: Questions remain unanswered with Sony's Playstation 5

The next generation of consoles is just around the corner. In a large-scale presentation, Sony promises new details on Playstation 5. How expensive the device will be and when it will finally be released remains open. The manufacturer, however, consults the fans with something else.

Due to the corona-related cancellation of the annual video game trade fair Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, the console manufacturers are concentrating on visually stunning presentations online when presenting new hardware and software. After the new Playstation 5 had already been announced, further details should follow on the online E3 alternative. Developer Sony invited via live stream to "an excursion into the future of gaming". 25 new game titles for the new PS5 were presented, but the really important questions remained unanswered for gamers.

Neither the price nor the release date let Sony look at the cards during the one-hour presentation. According to previous plans, the console will probably come on the Christmas market. The Corona crisis doesn't seem to have changed that.

Sony's next game console will also be available in a version without a disc drive for downloading the games for the first time. The "Digital Edition" looks noticeably narrower on the first pictures than the model, which can also read games on Blu-ray Disc.

Microsoft had already introduced a variant of its current Xbox One console without a disc drive last year. No such plans have been announced for the next Xbox Series X, which will compete against Playstation 5.

Sony also presented the look of the new Playstation for the first time at night. It is two-tone, with a black housing core and a curved white casing around it. The Xbox Series X is now like a monolith.

So far, Sony has presented the details of the Playstation 5 bit by bit. The technical data was last presented in spring. The console is said to support the high 8K image resolution for particularly sharp display and to have a flash memory developed in-house by the group. Sony also introduced various game titles for the PS5. In addition to exclusive titles such as "Spider-Man: Miles Morales" and "Zero Dawn 2", this also included a continuation of the classics of the "Resident Evil" series and a new edition of "Grand Theft Auto V".
