Rams move brings St. Louis $ 790 million
It is not uncommon for teams to change cities in the NFL. The lawsuit from St. Louis, on the other hand, is more likely: The city from the US state of Missouri has demanded one billion US dollars for the Rams to move away. Now the community and the league are ending the legal battle.
Five years after leaving St. Louis and returning to Los Angeles, the NFL and the Rams pay $ 790 million in compensation to the Missouri city. This settlement was agreed, it said in a communication from the municipality and the district on Wednesday.
St. Louis sued the National Football League and Rams owner Stan Kroenke for $ 1 billion in damages after Kroenke moved the Rams back to Los Angeles. This lawsuit is now void. The Rams had played in Los Angeles until 1995 and then made their home in St. Louis until 2016. It is not uncommon for teams in the major US leagues to change cities. The Los Angeles Chargers played in San Diego until about 2017. The Oakland Raiders last moved and have been the Las Vegas Raiders since 2020.
The Mayoress of St. Louis welcomes the settlement. “This historic agreement closes a long chapter for our region by securing hundreds of millions of dollars for our communities while avoiding the uncertainty of the process and the appeal process,” said Tishaura Jones in a statement.
St. Louis had accused the NFL and Kroenke, however, of breaking rules about moving a team and, among other things, bringing the region to millions of tax revenues. Several court judgments had so far failed in favor of the plaintiffs. According to reports from US media, the NFL, Kroenke and the other team owners in the league are sharing the $ 790 million.
