Between October 7 and 8, 2022, 40 top reporters gathered in Bayeux to award the prizes for the best written press, radio, television, large-format television, video image, photo and young photo reporter reports, not to mention the Public Prize.
Nikon Photo Award: Evgeniy Malolekta
The war in Ukraine was of course included in this award devoted to war correspondents. Thus, the Nikon Photo Prize was awarded to war photographer Evgeniy Malolekta of the Associated Press for his reportage “The Siege of Mariupol”. The recipient photo shows a pregnant woman exfiltrated from a maternity hospital by volunteers during a bombardment on March 9, 2022. The latter and her child ultimately died.
Second place went to Yasuyoshi Chiba, a Japanese AFP photographer covering East Africa, for his report “The rebels retake the capital of Tigray” about the civil war in Ethiopia. Yasuyoshi Chiba also won the World Press Photo in 2020.
Third place is occupied by Vadim Ghirda, a Romanian photographer working for the Associated Press and who has also produced a report on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict: “War in Ukraine”.
Young Photo Reporter Award
In the Young Photo Reporter category, the prize went to Abdulmonam Eassa, a Franco-Syrian freelance photojournalist, for his report “Peaceful Rage Does Not Die”made in Sudan.
Audience Award
Finally, the Public Prize, sponsored by the French Development Agency, was awarded to Vadim Ghirda for the aforementioned report.
