No bird, no airplane: Macrobat is supposed to conquer the sky

TECHNOLOGY

The world has never seen a flying object like the Phractyl Macrobat. It was inspired by an African startup that has big plans. The video in particular is well worth seeing.

  • The African startup Phractyl has presented an unusual concept for an electric aircraft.
  • The “Macrobat”, which takes off and lands almost vertically, is reminiscent of a bird of prey.
  • Instead of wheels, it has motorized runners. Far from the only unusual thing about this aircraft.

The name UFO hits the nail on the head when you see the Phractyl Macrobat – because the world has never seen such a flying object. An electrically powered bird that you can sit in and fly away!

Similar to an eVTOL, the cabin and wings incline for take-off and landing. However, it is not a whiz. Macrobat was conceived by an African startup. The young company has high hopes for eVTOL technology, as infrastructures are often inadequate, reports the US magazine New Atlas.

Macrobat, on the other hand, like comparable aircraft, is able to manage without a runway, without an airport – even without a helicopter port. The runner-shaped “gripper arms” are designed to ensure that the bird can take off and land on uneven terrain. The “legs” can also be leveled differently to compensate for unevenness.

Presentation of Phractyl Macrobat

The project is still in the development phase. Many detailed questions, such as the type and number of propellers, the take-off and landing process, have not been clarified. On paper, the new aircraft is supposed to transport a person and their luggage with a maximum weight of 150 kilograms and reach a top speed of 180 km / h. The electric range should be 150 kilometers. Autonomous flights are also being considered.

The startup is looking for investors and has – we think – created a sympathetic video. We have included it above for you. It remains to be seen whether the concept will ever be ready for series production. So far there is no working prototype. Individual parts are in the test phase. You can find more information about the project on the company’s homepage.
