Olympics: why the Netherlands crush the competition in speed skating


At the Olympic Games, the kingdom has won more Olympic titles with this single discipline than all French athletes for a century.

With a peak at 320 m, temperatures that are not necessarily freezing and zero outdoor ski resorts, the Netherlands is not necessarily known to be a great winter sports nation. And yet, the monarchy has crushed speed skating at the Olympics for ages: 121 medals in total, including 42 gold. An exceptional record since this country has more Olympic champions than France (36) since 1924 in Chamonix with this discipline only!

The Netherlands did not miss their entry into the running in Beijing by winning the first title at stake on Saturday. First coronation of a new harvest announced on the twelve events which will be held during the fortnight. In Pyeongchang in 2018, the Dutch delegation won 14 medals out of a possible 32 and four years earlier in Sochi, the supremacy had been even more evident with 23 medals.
