The corona numbers in Switzerland remain high. Around 3,000 people are infected with the virus every day. People who have already been vaccinated twice are also infected again and again.
However, the risk of a so-called vaccination breakthrough is rare. At the beginning of August, Blick showed that 460 people were infected with the virus despite being vaccinated. This corresponds to a breakthrough rate of 0.01 percent. Every ten thousandth Swiss vaccinated has been proven to be infected despite the spade.
Figures from the USA support findings
New figures from the USA support these results. the “New York Times” took a close look at the US states of Utah, Virginia and King County with the city of Seattle. In all three regions it can be seen that around one in five thousandths was infected despite having been vaccinated twice.
In regions with few corona cases, the chance even drops again. In large cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco, the risk of becoming infected despite the vaccination is around 1 in 10,000.
Virus behaves differently
“There was a lot of wrong communication about how high the risks for vaccinated people really are,” says virologist Ashish Jha from Brown University. In the past few months, for example, there has been a lot of discussion about the viral load in the nasal mucous membranes. A study showed that vaccinated and unvaccinated people carry practically the same viral load.
“No matter how high the viral load is: The virus behaves differently, depending on whether the person is vaccinated or not,” explains the virologist. This allows vaccinated people to fight off the virus, but unvaccinated people cannot.
The number of vaccinated people who have to go to hospital is roughly the same as in Switzerland. Of the fully vaccinated people, only around one in fifty thousand had to go to hospital in both Switzerland and the USA. (zis)
