Out in the Conference League – Servette loses her nerve in the penalty shootout – Sport

No goals in the first leg, no goals in the second leg. After 210 minutes without anything countable, the penalty shootout had to decide the round of 16 between Viktoria Pilsen and Servette. The guests from western Switzerland came to this with good feelings, as they had been successful this season in both the second CL qualifying round against Genk and in the cup round of 16 against Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy.

But in Pilsen the series was to break. The penalty shootout started very badly: the first Geneva shooter, Miroslav Stevanovic, failed in his attempt against Martin Jedlicka. Later Yoan Severin also found his master in Jedlicka. When Keigo Tsunemoto finally fired his shot past the post on the left, the decision was made. While Pilsen had sunk three out of three attempts, only Jérémy Guillemenot from Geneva was up to the task.

This is how a strong international campaign by the Genevans came to an annoying end. The “Grenats” were absolutely equal to the Czechs in both games. But in front of the goal, coach René Weiler’s team, as in the previous rounds, lacked the coolness.

Jedlicka saves Pilsen from being out

In the first 90 minutes, substitute Alexis Antunes almost sent Geneva into the next round. In the 89th minute, the offensive man rose high in the penalty area, but Jedlicka miraculously fished his good header off the line. It would have been the reward for a good second half by the Servettiens. Stevanovic had already tested Jedlicka twice before.

The starting phase of the game, however, belonged to the host. Pilsen had dangerous actions almost every minute in the first quarter of an hour. In the 13th minute the ball was even behind Frick in the goal, but Robin Hranac was offside when he finished. 60 seconds later, Pavel Sulc headed past the goal while standing alone.

Five minutes after Gaël Ondoua’s long-range shot forced the outstanding Jedlicka into a strong save, there was an upset at the Geneva goal. Because suddenly keeper Jérémy Frick was on the ground holding his head. The goalkeeper was hit by a beer cup that flew from the stands. Frick was able to continue playing after a short treatment. It is quite possible that UEFA will look at this scene again.

The extension was no longer able to keep up with what was shown before. The players were somewhat tired. In addition, both teams didn’t want to avoid the penalty shootout at any cost. This was to take revenge for the Servettiens.
