An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 occurred Wednesday morning off the Greek island of Crete before a aftershock of 5.3 in the evening, the Athens Observatory announced. The epicenter of the first earthquake at 05:08 GMT was located at sea 59 km deep and 48 km south-east of Arvi, south of Heraklion, capital of the island, according to the Observatory of ‘Athens.
Almost ten hours later, a 5.3 magnitude aftershock was recorded with the same epicenter. No casualties or damage were immediately reported but Greek firefighters were mobilized Wednesday in the area affected by the earthquake. According to Greek media, Wednesday morning’s shock was felt as far as Egypt.
Greece is located on several seismic faults and regularly experiences earthquakes. In October 2020, a 7.0 earthquake hit the Aegean Sea, between the Greek island of Samos and the city of Izmir, in western Turkey. Most of the damage occurred in Turkey, where 114 people were killed and more than a thousand were injured. In Greece, two teenagers lost their lives in Samos.
