Prince Christian’s 18th birthday
Three royals make a fashion faux pas
Fashionable missteps are extremely rare among European royals – but now it’s happened and it’s a three-pack. At Prince Christian’s big birthday banquet, three ladies fall into the trap of the royal rules. The problem: the sashes.
It is one of the major royal events of the year: Prince Christian, second in line to the Danish throne, is celebrating his 18th birthday. For Queen Margrethe II, 83, it was a great opportunity to invite people to an exclusive gala dinner. In addition to around 110 guests from the public, all sorts of nobles also celebrate the adult prince in the middle of the ballroom at Christiansborg Palace. And they really dressed up for it.
Also in attendance: Princess Ingrid-Alexandra, 19, Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, 21, and Princess Marie-Chantal, 55. They are actually always perfectly dressed. But on closer inspection, at Prince Christian’s official birthday party, the three of them made a fashion faux pas. While they can impress with their glamor robes, one small accessory doesn’t seem to fit at all: the sash.
Fashion faux pas: Ingrid Alexandra and Elisabeth wear sashes on bare skin
At large royal celebrations, one particular accessory often stands out: the sash. Since the 16th century, this has been worn for representative reasons and indicates that the wearer has achieved a special achievement and even belongs to the nobility. However, one thing must be particularly taken into account: the sash band must not lie on bare skin. This is a no-go in the Royal rule book.
The heir to the Belgian throne also seems to have forgotten the sash component when choosing her clothing. The purple ribbon goes perfectly with the champagne-colored off-the-shoulder dress, but it also touches the princess’s skin.

Princess Marie-Chantal positions her ribbon on the wrong side
And Marie-Chantal from Greece didn’t hit the mark with her sash position either. She is attending the event with husband Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece, 56, nephew of Denmark’s Queen Margrethe. Pavlos wears the collage of the Order of Saint George and Saint Constantine around his neck and also the Danish Elephant Order, one of the rare orders in which the light blue shoulder strap is worn over the left shoulder. Is that why his wife was confused?
She herself does not have a Danish medal, but wears her dark blue ribbon from the Greek Order of Saint Olga and Saint Sophia, but also over her left shoulder. Although the ribbon actually belongs to the right! A protocol error that no one notices at first. Only when the 55-year-old sits down a few minutes later does she present the initially incorrectly placed sash over her right shoulder as it should.
