Just a few days ago, Princess Madeleine posted a new photo on her social media account. It shows autumnal New York, where she was visiting a project. But what was intended as a friendly greeting from the USA caused resentment among her compatriots.

Actually, the Swedes are happy with every sign of life they receive from Princess Madeleine, 40, who lives in the USA, on Instagram. The daughter of King Carl Gustaf, 76, and Queen Silvia, 78, rarely posts impressions of their everyday life on their social media channel. But this time, some critical remarks are piling up under the latest greeting from afar. The reason is not the motive, but the comment of the Swedish Royal.

Princess Madeleine raves about her favorite city – and it’s not Stockholm

In addition to an autumn view of some of New York’s famous skyscrapers, the daughter of the Swedish royal couple also shared why she traveled to the Big Apple: “I’m back in my favorite city for a board meeting and a project visit. I’ve got the drop-in Childhood partner Safe Horizon’s center in Harlem. I am proud and grateful to see the care and service provided to street youth in NYC. Childhood’s support is much needed!”

The Childhood Foundation, founded by Queen Silvia in 1999, is committed to the rights of children and young people. Madeleine has been working for the foundation for many years and has been Vice-Honorary Chair for a while. She is always happy to provide information about her work for Childhood on her Instagram account.

Fans react with displeasure

However, some of her followers were a little irritated that, as a Swede, she called New York her favorite city. “I’m sorry but I don’t know which city you photographed, is it Stockholm? Beautiful picture by the way… Enjoy,” wrote a user with a touch of irony under the picture. Another wrote: “I thought your favorite city was Stockholm….”

Comments that certainly won’t leave Madeleine untouched. Since her move to the United States, voices have been raised regularly in her homeland calling for the king’s daughter to return or at least to visit Sweden more frequently.

New York has Madeleine in its heart

The princess, who has been living in Florida with her husband Chris O’Neill, 48, and their three children for a number of years, has long had a close connection to New York.

When she separated from her fiancé Jonas Bergström, 43, in 2010, she traveled to the metropolis to gain distance. It was there that she met her now husband and gave birth to their daughter Princess Leonore, 8, in February 2014 in the city. No wonder, then, that New York holds a special place in the heart of the Swedish princess. And yet, it seems Madeleine should show that love a little more diplomatically.
