Problems with the engine – BMW stops delivering the M3 and M4 models

BMW has suspended delivery of the M3 and M4 models. The reason for this are problems with a component supplied for the biturbo six-cylinder engine. A recall of vehicles that are already in customer hands is not planned.

During a routine quality control, defects in the main bearing shells of the engine have been discovered, as reported by the magazine Auto Motor und Sport. These bearings hold the crankshaft and are lubricated with engine oil. In addition, they are coated – and it is precisely this coating that is faulty in the affected specimens.

Even though we have just reported that more and more cars are being sold immature, the problems here are not an example of this. The construction itself fits, it should just have been a supplier. The exact background is currently being determined at the factory. 35 vehicles are currently affected. According to the AMS, there had been similar problems with earlier generations.

The powerful engine is available in two power levels, with 480 hp and the competition version with 510 hp. It is used in the BMW M3, the BMW M4 Coupé and the BMW M4 Convertible. In the best case, it enables a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of up to 290 km / h (if you have ordered the M Drivers Package).
