Promotion becomes more difficult: Holstein Kiel increases concerns in Bremen

Recovery becomes more difficult
Holstein Kiel increases concerns in Bremen

In the north derby there is nothing to gain for Bundesliga relegated Bremen in Kiel. Werder are still lagging behind their ambitions for promotion in the second division. The hosts, on the other hand, can work their way from the lower part of the table to midfield.

Holstein Kiel has taken an important step out of the table basement of the 2nd Bundesliga and increased Werder Bremen’s worries. The Kiel won the evening deservedly 2: 1 (1: 0) and improved to twelfth place. Bremen remain behind their claims as tenth in the table and are now eight points behind the promotion relegation place.

Joshua Mees gave the hosts the lead shortly before the break, while Niclas Füllkrug (57th) equalized for Bremen after a mistake by Holstein goalkeeper Thomas Dähne, who could not knock the ball away outside the penalty area. Benedikt Pichler (65th) scored the winning goal for Kiel just eight minutes later. Unlucky the Holsteiner was goalkeeper Dähne – not only because of his mistake. He had to leave the field after a collision and was replaced by Ioannis Gelios (76th).

The Bremen team did create a few chances to score, but the Kiel team were more effective and showed the more pleasing game. Even ten minutes of stoppage time did not help Werder to get a draw. In the coming days, the decision will be announced as to who will be the head coach at the Weser and thus the successor to the resigned Markus Anfang. Former Kiel coach Ole Werner is the favorite.
