  • Storms on Thursday caused record precipitation, but also hurricanes and interruptions in rail traffic.
  • Western Switzerland was particularly affected, from Lake Geneva to the Jura to Basel.
  • At 135 kilometers per hour, a storm swept over Lac Léman near Saint-Prex in the canton of Vaud in the afternoon, as SRF Meteo reports.

SRF Meteo registered further gusts of wind with more than 100 kilometers per hour in Oron (VD), Plaffeien (FR) and Zermatt (VS), for example.

Because of the strong high-altitude wind, storms and locally even hurricane gusts from form over 118 km/h. This resulted in traffic delays due to fallen trees and partially flooded roads.

Because of the storm, rail traffic in the city of Basel was temporarily interrupted in the afternoon. But rail traffic was also interrupted or restricted between Laufen in the Basel area and Delsberg in the Jura and between Yverdon in Vaud and Freiburg. The reason for this was, among other things, catenary faults.

Severe storms have also passed over parts of Germany. No major damage was reported during the night. The police did not provide any information about injuries until the morning.

Several German federal states in the west, center and north-east were affected by the storm on Thursday. Videos and pictures of menacing clouds with lightning were shared on social networks.

According to the forecast of the German Weather Service (DWD), people in some regions have to be prepared for heavy rain on Friday.

Before the thunderstorm front, the air became muggy. In Chur, for example, 35.4 °C were registered with a foehn. According to SRF Meteo, this value is in the top 5 for June in the series of measurements that has been going on since 1959. But that’s the end of it for the time being: Today, Friday, only 25 °C and partly cloudy weather are to be expected, as SRF meteorologist Daniela Schmuki writes.
