Support for compulsory vaccination is growing

The right to physical integrity stands in the way of compulsory vaccination. However, as the burden on the clinics steadily increases, more and more Germans feel compulsory vaccination is necessary.

In view of the dramatic situation in many intensive care units, more and more people in Germany are in favor of a general vaccination requirement: The approval in the new RTL / ntv trend barometer rose significantly to 71 percent compared to 64 percent who had advocated mandatory vaccination for everyone two weeks ago. Only 26 percent, a good quarter of the population, are of the opinion that vaccination should be voluntary. In mid-November, 36 percent of those questioned had this view.

Those in favor of compulsory vaccination are particularly strong among the supporters of the Union and the Greens, here the quota is over 80 percent approval in each case. Even among FDP supporters, more than half of those questioned advocate a mandatory vaccination, while the liberal party leaders have so far rejected it. Only among AfD supporters is the majority against compulsory vaccination: 77 percent reject it, only 20 percent are in favor.

65 percent of German citizens – and thus a little more than in the previous week – also consider a lockdown including the closure of shops, clubs and leisure facilities, exit and contact restrictions and a ban on larger events to be right if the number of infections continues to rise. 31 percent are against a general “lockdown” even if the number of infections continues to rise.

The majority would like parties to pull together

The supporters of the SPD, the Greens, the Union and the Left are in favor of a new lockdown if the number of infections continues to rise. A narrow majority (53 percent) of the FDP supporters and a clear majority (83 percent) of AfD supporters are against a renewed lockdown.

With 74 percent, almost three quarters of German citizens are of the opinion that the traffic light and the Union parties should pull together in combating the corona pandemic and jointly decide on the necessary measures. Only a minority of 22 percent believe that Corona and the fight against the virus should also be discussed controversially between the parties. A majority of the supporters of the CDU / CSU, SPD, Greens, FDP and Left Party are in favor of political consensus in the Corona policy. The majority only see the AfD supporters differently.

The data basis for the RTL / ntv trend barometer on corona policy were the responses of 1005 respondents in the period from November 25th and 26th, 2021. The statistical error tolerance is +/- 3 percentage points.
