The “Schumacher” film about the Formula 1 star has been thrilling on Netflix since Wednesday. And these sports documentaries are also worth watching.

Since Wednesday (September 15) there is a new highlight in the sports documentary genre on the Netflix streaming service: “Schumacher”, a documentary about the former Formula 1 superstar Michael Schumacher (52). The film tells of the ambitious kart driver’s career as number one in racing. He also offers insights into his private life after the all-changing skiing accident at the end of 2013.

Anyone who has got a taste for sports documentaries should have seen these films and / or series as well.

“Senna”

The documentary “Senna” (2011) traces the life of the three-time Brazilian Formula 1 world champion Ayrton Senna (1960-1994), who had a fatal accident in Imola in 1994. British documentary filmmaker Asif Kapadia (49) combined previously unreleased recordings and private family videos with interviews with Senna himself, his colleagues and competitors.

“Diego Maradona”

“Diego Maradona” (2019) tells of the Argentine soccer superstar Diego Maradona (1960-2020), who moved from Barcelona to Naples in 1984 for what was then a crazy transfer fee. On the pitch, Maradona was a genius – off the pitch, they celebrated him like a god. But reality finally caught up with him. The film was released in cinemas in 2019 and again directed by Asif Kapadia.

“Kroos – The Movie”

In the documentary “Kroos – Der Film” (2029), Manfred Oldenburg follows the career of the footballer, who was born in Greifswald in 1990, and which took him from Rostock via Munich and Leverkusen to Madrid. “Nowitzki. The perfect throw”

“Nowitzki: the perfect throw” (2014) by Sebastian Dehnhardt (53) about the German 2.13 meter tall NBA star Dirk Nowitzki (43) tells the story of his amazing rise from a school gym in the southern German province to the top of the world Basketballs. “The Last Dance”

The Netflix miniseries “The Last Dance” (2020) by director Jason Hehir (44) revolves around the career of NBA star Michael Jordan (58) with a special focus on his final season with the Chicago Bulls. The series features exclusive footage from a film crew that had access to the Bulls, as well as interviews with many other NBA personalities such as Dennis Rodman, 60.

“Sunderland ’til I Die”

Netflix also celebrated successes with the two seasons of the series “Sunderland ’til I Die” (2018, 2020). The films document the events surrounding the English football club Sunderland AFC. Filming began in June 2017 in the expectation that Sunderland would fight for promotion to the Premier League. The series culminated in the takeover of the club by the former chairman and majority shareholder Stewart Donald after relegation.

“The team”

“The Team” (2014) is the official documentary of the German Football Association about the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. From the training camp in South Tyrol to Brazil to the big victory celebration, Philipp Lahm (37), Bastian Schweinsteiger (37), Thomas Müller (32), Joachim Löw (61) and Co. will be accompanied on their way to the 2014 world championship.
