Porsche has already done it, Aston Martin, Bugatti, Mercedes-AMG and Lexus too: all of these luxury brands from the automotive industry have already launched a yacht together with a boat builder. Less as a new source of income, but as an image statement to position your brand.
Cupra is now also working on that. Three years ago, the VW subsidiary Seat decided to expand the name of its sports models into an independent brand. At least as important as the new models like the Formentor or the upcoming Stromer El-Born: the style. Including own home accessories, bikes, clothing and motorsport department. Because somehow a new brand without a grown tradition à la Alfa Romeo or Mercedes has to convey a picture to its customers.
400 hp and bathroom on board
Now there is also a motorboat. Not a 20-meter ship like the Lexus – the D28 Formentor has to be eight meters long. It is based on the D28 of the Spanish noble boat builder De Antonio, of which the Swiss Stan Chmielewski is also at the helm. The boat has an output of 400 hp, a top speed of 40 knots – almost 75 km / h – and is in the Cupra house colors petrol blue and copper. There is space for up to ten positions; there is also a shower and toilet on board.
The sale of the limited Cupra D28 should start at the end of the year – at prices that are still unknown. Clue: The basic version of the D28 costs at least around 160,000 francs. The cooperation is to be continued in the coming year – with a hybrid version with a combined electric combustion engine.
