In a video, Shirin David made the international show of hands for domestic violence. Now she made it clear that this was an oversight.

Fans have worried about rapper Shirin David (26) in recent weeks. The musician will be selling her own iced tea in the near future announced this about a month ago in a YouTube video. Viewers noticed that the 26-year-old had encircled her thumb with the fingers of her left hand in one scene – this corresponds to the international hand signal for domestic violence. But David now gave the all-clear.

“It was just an accident”

In a new video, in which Shirin David announces her second studio album, the musician responded to the much discussed scene. In her video, she “accidentally made the hand signal for domestic violence and this clip went viral on TikTok and everywhere else,” said the rapper. But she is fine and well. However, she would like to thank you for the many messages she has received since the video. She really appreciates that.

“It was just an accident,” she emphasized again. “You know, when I gesticulate a lot, especially with the long nails, it quickly happens that I make movements.” She was “extremely sorry” for the resulting misunderstanding. However, she made a conscious decision against making a video only about the show of hands in order not to unnecessarily exaggerate the subject. David urged her fans to always pay attention to this sign and to take it seriously if they should come across it.

That’s behind the show of hands

The hand signal against domestic violence is made by pointing the flat hand forward, then bringing the thumb to the palm and enclosing it with the other fingers. This creates a fist that encloses the thumb. The Canadian Women’s Foundation launched the symbol about a year ago in order to be able to call for help in an internationally understandable manner, especially in video chats. Because especially during the pandemic, the number of cases of domestic violence rose dramatically.

In her current video, Shirin David pointed out that the Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Tasks offers help for women who experience domestic violence. The helpline can be reached free of charge 365 days a year around the clock on 08000 116016. Help for violence against men is available on 0800 1239900.
