The Malaysian government has halted a music festival in the capital Kuala Lumpur over two men kissing on stage.
The singer and bassist of the British band “The 1975” had kissed in protest against the fact that homosexuality is punishable in Malaysia.
The minister responsible explains the cancellation of the festival on Twitter: There are no compromises if Malaysian laws are questioned, denigrated or violated.
He supports freedom of speech, he said. However, traditions and values of the local culture must not be violated.

Band permanently banned from Malaysian stages
The band The 1975 has also been banned from performing in Malaysia, according to the government committee that oversees filming and performances by foreigners.
Homosexuality is considered a crime in predominantly Muslim Malaysia. Human rights activists warn of a growing intolerance towards lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
