So far only with Tesla – without a card: VW wants to simplify e-car charging

Charging an electric car is often tedious and error-prone, especially if you don’t drive a Tesla and therefore cannot use the brand’s own supercharger network. Volkswagen now wants to remove hurdles and add new charging technologies and services to its range. Then all ID models should be able to be recognized via the cable at fast charging stations and “refueled” with electricity instead of having to log in with a so-called RFID card.

This plug-and-charge process is expected to start as early as 2022. As it was said at an event in Berlin, users of e-cars should also soon have access to a larger charging network. In addition to the more than 270,000 connected public charging points in Europe today, around 53,000 with partners and dealers are to be added by 2025. Charging without a card will be possible from the new year in the network of the Ionity consortium as well as at Aral, BP and Eon stations. The creation of additional charging options is a key condition for maintaining the ramp-up of electromobility. VW CEO Herbert Diess recently commented on criticism of sluggish planning with individual petrol station operators: “I almost believe that the charging network is currently growing faster than sales of e-vehicles. Charging will not remain the bottleneck in electrification, the greater challenge will be battery production. ”VW is also expanding its energy services business. In the future, e-cars should be able to feed unneeded electricity into the public grid or into one’s own house – conversely, the car can be charged in a targeted manner when a particularly large amount of renewable electricity from wind or solar power is available. Power generators have to regulate their systems at peak loads as long as there is insufficient storage capacity in the network. Elke Temme, the manager responsible for the “Charging & Energy” division, said that if the batteries of the e-vehicles themselves were viewed as small, mobile storage devices the energy efficiency can be improved. According to Volkswagen, the so-called bidirectional charging is about to be launched on the market. According to a customer survey, the majority (67 percent) use the electric car for daily journeys between 11 and 50 kilometers. 70 percent charge the car at home, an equally large proportion only use green electricity.
