On November 30, Elizabeth II will no longer be at the head of the island of Barbados, which will become a republic led by President Sandra Mason.

Total independence finally acquired. On November 30, Queen Elizabeth II will be dethroned from one of her Commonwealth kingdoms. Barbados takes its ultimate independence from the British crown, according to the information of the site Royal Stories. This decision comes after a long democratic process launched on the island of Rihanna for a few years already. The sovereign will be dethroned by the current Governor General, Sandra Mason.

This total independence was voted unanimously by Parliament on September 29. The parliamentary vote focused on amending the constitution of the island, which already enjoyed political freedom. During her speech during the parliamentary session, Sandra Mason said: “The time has come to put our colonial past completely behind us. Barbadians want a Barbadian head of state. ” The island state had already called for this provision on two occasions: in the 1990s and in 2015. The political context of the time being complicated, this had caused both attempts to fail.

Sandra Mason, first President of Barbados

But this time, the attempt was successful and it will be effective on November 30, the very day that Barbados will celebrate its 55th anniversary of the start of its independence. Because before 1966, the country was part of the British colonial empire. In a little over a month, Barbados will therefore become a Republic thanks to its new Constitution which no longer recognizes Elizabeth II as its head of state, a purely honorary title. Sandra Mason will therefore succeed her by becoming the country’s first president. This 72-year-old woman is not unknown, neither to Barbadians nor to Elizabeth II, as she represented the Queen through her status as Governor General.
