This is one of the surprises that the pandemic has brought: the number of professional retraining has exploded, and many have chosen to open their own independent businesses. A change which obviously leads to the thorny question of means of payment. While the use of contactless payment is generalized, exit the cash register, hello the nomadic and connected payment terminal. This is what SumUp offers, all for a usually low price, but even more moderate at the moment thanks to great discounts at Boulanger.

How does SumUp work?

The manufacturer provides entrepreneurs and merchants with a payment solution by card or mobile, with or without contact. Three products are currently available for this:

  • The SumUp Solo: offered at € 79.99 with its charging station, it is compact, tactile and benefits from automatic updates. Nomadic and connected in short.
  • The SumUp 3G +: a complete and a little more classic tool offered at € 69.99. It has physical keys and can print receipts on paper. However, it remains perfectly compatible with mobile and contactless payment.
  • The SumUp Air: sold for € 17.99 on its own and € 29.99 with a charging cradle, it is the most mobile of the range. Everything is done on a smartphone, and the customer just has to swipe their card (or insert it if necessary) to pay for their purchases.

The great advantage of investing in a SumUp terminal is that unlike a traditional bank, once the terminal is purchased, you own it. So no rental fees. SumUp is remunerated by taking 1.75% of the amount of sales. In short, no sales, no fees, you only pay if you sell one of your products.

SumUp Solo: the youngest is also the most successful of the family

Do you need a clearly readable payment terminal that you can connect to WiFi or to the 3G network? The SumUp Solo is surely for you. With a built-in 3G SIM card, it can connect from anywhere, as long as there is network. It has a beautiful backlit touch screen that is more readable than its predecessors and a charging cradle allowing it to be used and visible to customers on your counter.

The SumUp Solo also updates itself and can install the latest options and features specific to this terminal, to provide an optimal shopping experience. A practical option that eliminates the need to check for updates by hand.

The tool also benefits from a “smart tip” option. The SumUp Solo can thus automatically suggest to the customer to add a tip of the amount of his choice, if he wishes of course.

Finally, we note that the SumUp Solo, like all of its cousins, allows you to pay both by inserting a payment card, but also contactless. This applies to physical bank cards, as well as smartphones (Apple Pay and Google Pay for example). Receipts are then sent by SMS or email.

SumUp 3G: the most complete terminal, with integrated printer

The SumUp 3G has a more traditional look. And like conventional payment terminals, it also works with a printer (optional) to provide a paper receipt after payment. If it does not come in such a compact or tactile format as a SumUp Solo or Air, it nevertheless has the comfort of physical keys, and above all it is the only one in the range to offer the option of printing received.

Here again, the terminal can operate on its own without a base thanks to its integrated 3G SIM card, which allows you to use the mobile network for free and without connecting it to a smartphone. A practical feature for those who have a nomadic business.

SumUp Air: nothing in your hands, everything on your mobile (or almost)

On this extremely compact terminal, most of the settings are made on your mobile via the manufacturer’s free application (Android or iOS). You just have to enter the desired amount from your smartphone, it will then be displayed on the SumUp Air. Payment by card or mobile can be done without a hitch. Here, no integrated SIM card, the device accesses the mobile network using your smartphone connected via Bluetooth.

For more convenience, it is also possible to add an optional charging cradle. An attractive accessory both aesthetically and practically. The base allows you to clearly show your future customers that you accept credit card payments. And it is also more hygienic, because it drastically reduces handling of the terminal.
