Switzerland: the right and the far right abolish the minimum wage

After the senators, the Swiss deputies voted to cancel the minimum wage. This only exists in a few cantons.

Dince this week, employees of restaurants, hotels, hairdressing, Geneva, Jura or Ticino, curse Erich Ettlin, centrist senator from the canton of Obwalden. This 60-year-old tax expert tabled a motion entitled “Protecting social partnership against questionable interference”. The “Questionable interference”, according to this German-speaking parliamentarian, are the cantons, mainly Latin, which voted for a minimum wage (the first came into force in Neuchâtel in 2017). From now on, “the provisions of an extended collective labor agreement (CCT), which concern the minimum wage, on 13e salary and the right to vacation take precedence over cantonal law”.

In June 2022, the Council of States (the Senate) had already voted on this motion. It was joined…
