Tesla recalls nearly half a million Model 3 and S models

Owners of a Tesla Model 3 or Model S, you are invited to contact the manufacturer to have your vehicle checked.

Nearly half a million Tesla vehicles are affected by a recall from the manufacturer, in order to check – and if necessary correct – the trunk locking system. A large-scale procedure that concerns all Model 3s marketed between 2017 and 2020 as well as certain Model S. In the official documents provided by the manufacturer, we learn that on the Model 3, Tesla fears that the opening and closing system trunk could eventually damage the rear view camera wire harness, preventing it from functioning. On Model Ss, the problem is considered more of a concern, since it could potentially prevent the trunk from closing and locking.

If one relies on the documents submitted to the American highway traffic authority (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA), a total of 475,318 vehicles are affected by this recall. The breakdown is as follows: 356,309 Model 3 and 119,109 Model S. According to its own estimates, the manufacturer indicates that 14% of the recalled Model 3s are likely to actually present the fault in the long term, against only 1% of the Model 3s. Regarding the latter and given the moderate level of severity of the potential damage, Tesla is therefore prudent. A way, too, to prove the seriousness of its after-sales service.

Reposition the Model 3 front trunk lock

The holders of a Model S concerned are therefore called upon as a priority to have their vehicle checked because the “front trunk latch may have a misalignment preventing it from closing properly“. It is therefore understood that the trunk concerned is the one present at the front of the vehicle, in the driver’s field of vision, and that if it were to open while driving, it would clearly be an event. The technical team and Tesla mechanics will therefore be invited to check the correct alignment of the lock, and to reposition it if necessary. Concerning the Model 3, it is a guide protector of the wire harness which will be installed if necessary, knowing that the manufacturer already undertakes to install a new wiring harness free of charge if necessary on all the cars concerned.
