The Cannes Film Festival selection committee enriches the 2022 edition with around fifteen new feature films added in the different sections. Find out which movies it is.
During the press conference on April 14, unveiling the selection for the 75th Cannes Film Festival, General Delegate Thierry Frémaux had promised an edition less loaded with films, after a 2021 vintage somewhat bottled up by “two years of cinema” due to of the cancellation of the previous edition.
However, the “few additions” announced are more numerous than expected, with no less than seventeen new feature films (!) included in the official selection, including three films (and two female directors) in Competition for the Palme d ‘Gold.
Our editorial staff presents these works to you, which will be unveiled on the Croisette from May 17 to 28.
COMPETITION – The Otto Montagne by Charlotte Vandermeersch & Felix Van Groeningen
After Close by Lukas Dhont and Tori and Lokita by the Dardenne brothers, a third Belgian film arrives in competition. Inspired by the bestseller by Italian Paolo Cognetti, Le Otto Montagne (or Les Huit Montagnes) follows the friendship story of a young city child and a cowherd, who we find twenty years later. late when the first returns to the places of his childhood and tries to reconcile with his past.
A drama directed by actress Charlotte Vandermeersch and director of My Beautiful Boy and Alabama Monroe, Felix Van Groeningen.
COMPETITION – A little brother of Léonor Serraille
Five years after winning the Camera d’Or at Cannes for Young Woman, selected for Un Certain Regard, the Frenchwoman Léonor Séraille arrives in competition with A little brother, the story of a woman who arrives from Africa and settles in suburbs of Paris with her two sons.
The portrait of an ordinary family that we follow over more than thirty years, led by actress Annabelle Lengronne (La fine team), Ahmed Sylla (revealed by Ascension) and Stéphane Bak, also present out of competition in the casting of November by Cédric Jimenez.
COMPETITION – Torment on the Islands by Albert Serra
Third selection for Albert Serra, but it’s a first in the Official Selection competition. After The Death of Louis XIV (Special Screening, 2016) and Freedom (Un Certain Regard, 2019), the Spanish filmmaker presents Torment on the Islands.
On a Pacific island, the thwarted love story between a French diplomat and a Polynesian writer, against a backdrop of racial tensions, political crises and espionage. Benoit Magimel, Sergi Lopez and Laura Poulvet are in the cast.
OUT OF COMPETITION – The Innocent by Louis Garrel
A year after presenting The Crusade in the new section dedicated to environmental films, Louis Garrel will already be back, out of competition. He will unveil his fourth film, L’Innocent, at the crossroads of romantic comedy and gangster film, with Roschdy Zem, Anouk Grinberg, Noémie Merlant and Louis Garrel himself.
The pitch: When Abel learns that his mother Sylvie, in her sixties, is about to marry a man in prison, he panics. Supported by Clémence, his best friend, he will do everything to try to protect her. But the meeting with Michel, his new father-in-law, could well offer Abel new perspectives….
CANNES PREMIERE – Don Juan by Serge Bozon
Tahar Rahim and Virginie Efira are going to push the song! In this revisit of Molière’s classic, Don Juan is no longer the seducer we know but a man obsessed with a single woman: the one who abandoned him on his wedding day. Desperation makes him see his former companion almost everywhere, which disturbs him all the more when he is called upon to play Don Juan.
Four years after Madame Hyde with Isabelle Huppert, for which he was already revisiting a classic of literature, Serge Bozon therefore returns with an astonishing musical comedy that promises sparks between its two main actors.
CANNES PREMIÈRE – The Night of 12 by Dominik Moll
Having already come into competition twice at the Cannes Film Festival with Harry, a friend who wishes you well and Lemming, Dominik Moll returns to the Croisette in the Cannes Première section this time to present his brand new film, based on the novel 18.3 – A year at the PJ.
A detective thriller, La Nuit du 12 tells how Yohan, newly appointed group leader at the Criminal Brigade of Grenoble, will be upset by the investigation into the murder of a certain Clara, which will be for him a case like no other. In the casting, we find Bastien Bouillon, Bouli Lanners and Anouk Grinberg.
CANNES PREMIÈRE – Chronicle of a temporary affair by Emmanuel Mouret
After the missed appointment of the 2020 edition, canceled due to the pandemic and of which he was to be part with The Things We Say, The Things We Do, Emmanuel Mouret will try to seduce the Competition with Chronicle of a temporary connection.
A title that is both tender and literary, in tune with the cinema of this explorer of feelings of love, which will follow the meetings of two lovers played by Vincent Macaigne and Sandrine Kiberlain. Beginning of a great love affair with the festival or brief adventure for the filmmaker?
MIDNIGHT SCREENING – Rebel by Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah
From Bad Boys For Life to… the Croisette! The duo of Belgian filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are among the additions to the Midnight Screening where they will unveil Rebel. The film follows Nassim, a 13-year-old Moroccan from Molenbeek of Muslim faith who, after the death of his father, is in the midst of an identity crisis. His mother, Leila, tries to keep him away from his big brother, Karim, who has “gone badly”.
SPECIAL SCREENING – Le Petit Nicolas, what are we waiting for to be happy? by Amandine Fredon & Benjamin Massoubre
After several live action adaptations, The little Nicolas will be the subject of an animated version for the cinema. The film, entitled Le Petit Nicolas – What are we waiting for to be happy? and co-directed by Amandine Fredon and Benjamin Massoubre, will take the form of a mise en abyme of the creation of this character.
Throughout the story, we can see the character of Little Nicolas slip into the workshop of its creators, and challenge them with humor. Sempé and Goscinny will tell him about their meeting, their friendship, but also their journey, their secrets and their childhood.
