Every single vaccination counts on the way to ending the corona pandemic. At the moment, anyone in Germany over the age of 18 can be vaccinated against the coronavirus. But one claim worries some people: The corona vaccination makes you sterile, it is wrongly said.
The fact is, there is no evidence that vaccination has any effect on fertility. Because the rumor persists, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), among others, is addressing it in a question-and-answer piece. In the area of ”Vaccination for pregnant women, breastfeeding women and those wishing to have children”, the statement, which is particularly widespread on the Internet, says: “This statement is false” and provides numerous points that refute it.
For example, in the non-clinical studies before the vaccines were approved, there was no evidence of post-vaccination infertility. In the approval study by the manufacturer Biontech, twelve women among the vaccinated and eleven women in the placebo group became pregnant within the two-month follow-up period.
Corona vaccination has no influence on the hormone level
The RKI also names a study from Israel from May 2021. Data from 36 couples who were undergoing treatment for artificial insemination and who were vaccinated during that time were evaluated. The institute announced that there was no difference in the number and quality of the egg cells obtained or the sperm parameters examined before and after the vaccination.
An Israeli study from December 2021 also dealt with female fertility in connection with the corona vaccination. At the Schiba Hospital near Tel Aviv, the level of the anti-Müllerian hormone was monitored in 129 women who had been completely vaccinated with Biontech. This provides information about how many egg cells a sexually mature woman produces. The result was that the vaccination had no effect on the hormone level.
