Günther Jauch (63) on the track. The figurehead of the RTL quiz show was a storybook career from a journalist student to a successful moderator.

Journalism school instead of law school

Günther Jauch, born in Münster in 1956, grew up mainly in Berlin-Lichterfelde. He graduated from high school in Berlin-Steglitz and began studying law in his hometown. But at the same time he pursued another career aspiration: in 1975 he dropped out of college and moved to the journalism school. Two years later, he graduated from it and began working as a sports presenter for the radio of the Bavarian Radio. From 1983 to 1985 he was a radio correspondent in Bonn.

Radio voice next to Thomas Gottschalk

Another degree course (Political and Modern History) that started in parallel broke off due to his other job. From 1985 he became the voice of a radio show with a well-known colleague: until 1989 he moderated the "B3 radio show" with Thomas Gottschalk (70). Gottschalk took over the afternoon, Jauch followed from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thomas Gottschalk hung up and entertained, Günther Jauch informed. The duo became known through the taunts during their improvised deliveries.

Jump to television and RTL

At the age of 29, Jauch switched to TV. He initially worked as a reporter and moderator for SDR, BR and ZDF. In the latter, he moderated the show "See it!" From 1987 to 1989. Already in 1988 he led "the current sports studio" for the first time. In 1990 he moved to RTL – where he became the face of the private broadcaster.

Way to the transmitter veteran

From 1990 until his retirement in January 2011, Günther Jauch led the TV magazine "stern TV". In 1999 she worked as a moderator for "Who wants to be a millionaire?" added. From then on, Jauch became one of the most popular moderators in the country. He still leads through the quiz show with wit and enthusiasm. In an interview with n-tv in 2019, he revealed how he sees his future as a "WWM" moderator: "The next anniversary would be in five years, so I'm slowly approaching 70. I can hardly imagine that, but I just let myself be surprised. " RTL also used Jauch in sports reporting. From January 2000 to December 2006, he moderated competitions in ski jumping together with Dieter Thoma (50). Jauch made a trip to the political talk from 2011 to 2015: He moderated his own Sunday evening talk show on the first.

Change on the candidate side

Günther Jauch also likes to change sides: From 2009, he demonstrated in "5 against Jauch" that he had accumulated considerable general knowledge through his many years with "WWM". In it, he is challenged by a team of five candidates who can answer the questions collectively, while Jauch has to answer it alone. In "Die 2 – Gottschalk & Jauch gegen alle" he dueled with Gottschalk against candidates from 2013 to 2017. Since 2018 there has been the successor "Because they don't know what happens", in which the two moderators take turns against Barbara Schöneberger (46) against celebrities.
