The Rings of Power teaser appeared to be in CGI. We were wrong.
The very first teaser of the series from Amazon in the universe of the Lord of the Rings, unveiled on January 19, 2022, served to stage the presentation of its title: Rings of Power (The Rings of Power, in English). Unfortunately for the fans, no actual image of the series has been released. We still have to wait before seeing Middle-earth again.
The whole sequence that is shown on the screen serves to establish a parallel between what the voice-over is saying – perhaps a young Galadriel, as in The Fellowship of the Ring — and what we see in the picture. It’s about recounting a legendary era, which evokes the birth of the rings of power – the One Ring, source of so much misfortune, but also other similar jewels.
At first glance, it seemed that this teaser video of the series was just a banal sequence in computer graphics. For an effect on the public, moreover, contrasting: if Internet users appreciated the visual, others found that it seemed artificial and a little too flashy, with too saturated colors and excessive light and glitter effects .
The Rings of Power teaser is CGI-free
We were on the wrong track. IGN was able to access behind the scenes of the design of the video and it turns out that what we see in the image comes from a real artisanal manufacturing process, exactly as one would see in a workshop or a foundry , with molten metal, worked wood in which the letters of the series have been dug, thus forming a furrow in which the liquid flows.
” Multiple pours of molten metal were filmed with the Phantom Flex 4K camera until the creators achieved the exact effect they were looking for ,” IGN reported on January 19.
We also see a camera pass a few times, very close to the work, to capture the sparks, the flames emerging from the molten metal and the grain of the wood. The creation of the video also mobilized red wood, argon, liquid hydrogen or sparkler dust.
We guess it without difficulty: it was a question of echoing the creation of the magic rings, by reproducing processes as artisanal as possible.
