The girl was killed on August 27, 2017 by Nordahl Lelandais, while she was attending a wedding with her parents in Pont-de-Beauvoisin in Isère. Jennifer Maeco de Araujo, his mother, sends him a poignant message today, in which she describes her absence as " insupportable ".

“My ray of sunshine that illuminated my life, I will miss you forever. My mother's heart will always bleed, I miss your laugh, your voice, your humor, I miss everything about you. I loved you, I love you, I will love you with all my heart ”, she added. Before making a promise to him: "I remain strong for you Maëlys, so that Justice can do its job and let this soulless monster rot and suffer in its perpetual prison. "
A sordid affair
First indicted for the kidnapping of the girl, Nordahl Lelandais finally confessed, six months later, to having killed little Maëlys and hiding her body in the Chartreuse massif. During his hearing, he explained that he wanted to show the young girl his dogs in his car. The latter would have panicked and screamed and he would then slap her. During the re-enactment, in September 2018, he declared that he had dealt him "several violent blows", resulting in his death.
This affair deeply affected France. While the former dog handler has been in detention since 2017, the date for Maëlys' trial has not yet been set.
