The Rings of Power: Misfortune for Míriel – does she go blind in the books too?

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER

Queen Regent Míriel loses her sight in Episode 7 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Netzwelt reveals whether this also happened in Tolkien’s work or whether Amazon took some liberties here.

After Queen Regent Míriel was not always well disposed towards Galadriel and her plans in “The Rings of Power”, she finally accompanied the Elf to Middle-earth and brought the soldiers of Númenor with her to be able to go into battle against Adar and his orcs.

However, Míriel could now regret this decision, because the eruption of Mount Doom at the end of Episode 6 and the resulting consequences blinded the queen regent of Númenor. A twist that Tolkien connoisseurs could hardly foresee, after all, nowhere in Tolkien’s works is it written that Míriel is losing her sight.

However, before accusing Amazon of unnecessarily inventing new twists of fate here, one has to consider that Míriel hardly played a role in Tolkien in general. Míriel is the daughter of the King of Númenor and would have become queen herself had Pharazon not married her against her will.

Thus Pharazon became king, angering the Valar and Ilúvatar with his decisions, and thus Númenor was sunk in the sea, along with Míriel, who failed to escape in time. So Míriel remained a rather small and passive figure with Tolkien.

We see a lot more of Míriel in the series and while the cornerstones of her story certainly remain, there is room in The Rings of Power for new information as long as it doesn’t change Míriel’s story too much.

Pharazon will probably even find it easier to convince Míriel to marry him if she now doubts her potential as regent. In any case, she will hardly join any further battles.

We will find out how the story continues for Míriel on October 14, 2022 in the Amazon Prime Video news program. Then we already have the season 1 finale waiting for us, but don’t worry, season 2 of “The Rings of Power” is already in production!
