The train was rolling – a senior woman drove two kilometers on the tracks

An extremely unusual incident occurred on Wednesday evening between Dornbirn and Schwarzach in Vorarlberg. A 70-year-old driver drove onto a train platform and then drove her car along the tracks for almost two kilometers in the direction of Schwarzach. Luckily the railway line was closed immediately because a train would have already been rolling in.

A 70-year-old car driver drove onto the platform of Haselstauden train station in Dornbirn’s Bachgasse at 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday and fell 76 centimeters from the platform onto the tracks. The woman didn’t get out of the car there, but instead stepped on the gas. So she continued on the tracks for around 1,800 meters. She was then stopped at Schwarzach train station by police officers who had already been alerted. Immediate track closure initiated. Fortunately, the police had already received a corresponding report of a car on the tracks via an emergency call at 10:45 p.m. That’s why an immediate track closure was initiated, which meant that a collision between the car and a train that was ready to leave Dornbirn for Bregenz was just avoided. The driver suffered a shock, but no one was injured. An alcohol test was negative. Since the woman was not oriented to time and place and was overtired, her driver’s license was temporarily taken away. The car, which was then no longer drivable, suffered significant damage to the underbody. The track between Haselstauden station and Schwarzach station suffered several damages of an unknown extent.
