The wheel of time: These 8 big questions must be answered in Season 2 of the Amazon series

With “The Wheel of Time”, Amazon Prime Video brought the book series of the same name to life and implemented the fantasy saga as a series. After a successful first season, the story is set to continue in season 2 on September 1, 2023.

The season 1 finale brought viewers some answers to some of the big questions raised throughout the series, but many remain unanswered. We try to clarify this for you with the help of the book template so that we don’t start the new season unknowingly.

1: Who is the Dragon Reborn?

In Robert Jordan’s legendary book, there’s never a doubt: Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) is the Dragon Reborn. Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike) knows this pretty early on – and so do the readers, of course.

However, the Amazon series “The Wheel of Time” changes the central prophecy about the reborn dragon. So it is possible that a woman is the dragon, or that several people share this role.

The season 1 finale of “The Wheel of Time” nevertheless confirmed the first impression after Rand al’Thor as Dragon Reborn. However, Egwene (Madeleine Madden) and Nynaeve (Zoë Robins) also take part in the grand final confrontation at Tarwin Pass, destroying a Trolloc army there.

That role falls to Rand al’Thor in the original book, suggesting that the full truth about Dragon Reborn may not be fully revealed in Season 1.

2: Has the Dark One been defeated?

In the Season 1 finale of The Wheel of Time, Rand al’Thor appears to have defeated the Dark One. But Moiraine quickly realizes that they have been misled. She discovers some broken pieces of cuendillar, a nearly indestructible substance also known as the heartstone. In the original book, the seals on the Dark One’s prison are made of this mineral.

Clearly, then, Rand al’Thor’s outbreak of the One Power weakened the Dark One’s prison instead of defeating him. In addition, the Dark One now knows the identity of the Dragon Reborn.

Again, the book template provides enlightening: There Moiraine and Rand al’Thor do not face the Dark King at all, but his most powerful servant Ishamael, the leader of the lost. Here, Ishamael and the rest of the Forsaken use the weakening of the seals to escape – and the Dark One would not have appeared then!

3: Does Logain know that Rand is the Dragon Reborn?

The Fake Dragon Logain Ablar (Álvaro Morte) was subdued during the first season of “The Wheel of Time” and lost his power. He also saw Rand al’Thor as a prisoner in Tar Valon and laughed aloud.

The background to this short scene from Season 1 can again be found in the original book. There it is revealed that despite his dampening, Logain still possesses the ability to sense male channelers. He recognized Rand’s power just by looking at it.

At that moment, Logain is amused to see a male channeler roaming free – and at the foot of the White Tower at that. But he doesn’t immediately recognize that Rand al’Thor is the Dragon Reborn, although he suspects it.

4: Can Moiraine Reclaim the One Power?

In the Season 1 finale of “The Wheel of Time,” the Dark One (or his servant Ishamael) strips Moiraine of her access to the One Power. This is a big change compared to the original book, where Moiraine has such an experience much later.

As Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins revealed to Decider, this was done on the Amazon show to give Moiraine enough to do in Season 2. In Book 2 of the literary original, Moiraine only appears in one chapter. But since she’s already established as a main character in the Amazon series (and being played by superstar Rosamund Pike), Moiraine obviously needs to have a significant storyline in Season 2.

5: Is the Ogier Loial really dead?

For book readers, the season 1 finale of “The Wheel of Time” held a more than shocking twist: the popular Ogier Loial (Hammed Animashaun) was apparently killed. That was very surprising, because Loial is one of the most important characters in the books and has a great influence on the further course of the story.

But is the fan favorite really dead? No! As we know from the Season 2 trailer, Loial will survive. But how long it will take to regenerate is unknown.

6: Why is Mat returning to Tar Valon?

The Dark King seems to be hoping that at least one of the 5 friends will switch sides. Currently, Mat (Barney Harris) seems like the most likely candidate for this. Finally, in Season 1, Mat was under the influence of an enchanted dagger that fed on the darkness dormant within him.

Mat left his friends before they embarked on the Short Paths. Rather than confront the Dark One, Mat returned to Tar Valon in the season 1 finale. However, according to Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins, Mat will be cured of the dagger’s ominous influence here in Season 2.

7: Who is Liandrin’s mysterious man?

Liandrin Guirale (Kate Fleetwood) is an Aes Sedai of the Red Ajah that viewers of “The Wheel of Time” meet in Season 1. Liandrin seems to hate male channelers, but in Episode 6, Moiraine reveals that she knows a secret about Liandrin: the Red Ajah regularly meets with a mysterious man.

However, Moiraine probably thinks this is about a romance or an affair. Book readers know, however, that Liandrin is secretly part of the Black Ajah. These Aes Sedai have betrayed their oaths and secretly swore allegiance to the Dark One.

Since the Aes Sedai in the White Tower are totally ignorant of this, Liandrin is free to manipulate her sisters.

8: Who are the Seanchan Invaders?

In the season 1 finale of “The Wheel of Time,” the Seanchan appear, a fleet of invaders coming across the water. Channelers are treated very differently in this empire. Here they are enslaved.

The Seanchan become formidable adversaries in Season 2 and beyond. If the Amazon series sticks to the template, Egwene will be enslaved by them and Mat will be linked to the Empress.
