It's time to be inclusive, especially with children! Because yes, all families are not the same. Although in most cases children have a father and a mother, there are increasingly different and less traditional patterns. On Instagram, an author shared a post that went viral on her account. The post contained a screenshot of a tweet from Sirry Aland, Ph.D which read “Teachers, your class conversations are broadcast in homes. The number of times the teacher said 'your mom and dad' to my kid's class is infuriating. Children can quickly feel left out, starting with school. Teachers have a habit of asking questions about children's family life when all school children have different stories. Some live with two moms or two dads, others in single-parent families, others live with their grandparents or with foster families, in short, there are a multitude of patterns.
A change of language
To adopt a more inclusive language, Glennon Doyle, an author came up with the idea of using the term "Your adults". “Remember to say 'your adults'. I used this when I was teaching and it helped me. The language of adults can determine where children belong ", she writes.
A trick that will help children stop feeling uncomfortable. "This little difference in language shows toddlers that all families are real and important and should be honored", wrote the young woman next to the Instagram post. "That little difference can make a child feel celebrated instead of being singled out."
A method that can be applied to teachers but also outside the school system to avoid excluding children in any situation.
