This mother had to choose between having her amputated or keeping her baby

Becky Turner, 32, from Wales, was only 18 weeks pregnant when an incredible ultimatum hit her: her foot or her baby.

Becky was born with Spina Bifida, a malformation in utero, which leads in particular to neurological sequelae. The young woman has always suffered from serious foot problems and an infection that was gradually spreading in her bones. Unfortunately, being pregnant, the mother-to-be could not take any of the medications she needed.

“It was one or the other, so I stopped the treatment”, she said

Without treatment, the infection spread faster and faster. Becky therefore had no other choice, if she wanted to save her baby, she had to have her leg amputated. And that’s what she did!

“For me that was something that was pretty inevitable anyway, so I would have preferred to do it during pregnancy, when it was safe in the second trimester than to maybe have to drop the baby and go to the hospital. ‘hospital for the first two months of his life. ” she declared

Difficult beginnings.

Although no other complications came to disrupt the pregnancy, the first months after the birth of little Caitlyn were rather difficult for the new mother.

“It was pretty hard after the amputation. It was around Christmas. My husband, Richard, had to stop working for 10 months to help me around the house and take care of me. was a time I was pretty depressed. I didn’t feel like I could be a real mom. I was stuck in that wheelchair and couldn’t do the things I felt I had to do as a new mom. ”, she confided.

It wasn’t until 5 months after the birth that Becky was able to take her baby girl for a walk for the first time.

“It was just the best feeling ever.”

The decision of a lifetime

Becky’s life was completely turned upside down by this decision, but she is totally embracing her choice.
“It was a shock, but we made the best decision. It was more of a relief because it ended all dating and that fear of not being able to be the best mom possible.”

On July 31, it is accompanied by about forty relatives that Becky will take up the challenge of climbing Pen-y-Fan, the highest peak in Wales, culminating at 886 m above sea level. The goal is to raise funds for a charity that helps children with amputees.

“I’ve never been the type to exercise too much because of the pain. I can’t do everything I want to. But I take it upon myself. I just want to do something to push myself and help them. others. I’m nervous about the climb, but even if I have to stop a million times, I’ll make it to the top. “, she concluded with determination.
