This popular fruit juice contains as much sugar and more calories than soda

Just as sweet as a soda, and even more caloric, this industrial fruit juice should be consumed in moderation when you want to lose weight.

When we are trying to lose weight, or are monitoring our blood sugar levels, we tend to eat more fruits and vegetables. Rich in vitamins, fiber and minerals, these foods are essential in rebalancing your diet and also make it easy to increase the volume of your plates. However, there are certain pitfalls to watch out for, particularly in the case of fruit juices and smoothies.

Often considered “healthy” drinks, and sometimes accompanied by the words “no added sugar”, we forget that fruit juices and smoothies are naturally very rich in sugar, more particularly in fructose. As a reminder, the European directive of April 19, 2012 prohibits the addition of sugar to pure juices and juices made from concentrated juice. Only nectars can have added sugar. You should therefore not let yourself be influenced by this mention! In a video posted on his social networks, the dietician and sports coach @davfit_coach_sportif compares the composition of an Innocent brand fruit juice to that of an original Coca Cola flavor. A comparison that raises some questions.

Innocent fruit juice has more calories than Coca Cola

In this video, the dietitian compares 100 ml of Innocent strawberry banana fruit juice with 100 ml of Coca Cola original taste. For Coca Cola, there are 41 kcal and 10.6 grams of sugar. As for Innocent fruit juice, 51 kcal, 10 grams of sugar. Innocent fruit juice appears to be more caloric and just as sweet as soda, with a much higher price per liter. But when we look in a little more detail at the composition of the two products, we realize that other criteria must be taken into account.

Indeed, when following a dietary rebalancing, we must not only be interested in the calorie content of the foods we consume, but above all in their nutritional qualities. Innocent fruit juice is certainly very sweet, but it contains vitamins (0.008g of vitamin C per 100 ml) and even a little fiber (1.2g of fiber per 100 ml). Soda contains 2 additives and no micronutrients. In this case we speak of “empty calories” because the product does not provide any nutritional benefit to the body.

Why is it important to limit your consumption of fruit juice?

Even though fruit juices and smoothies are healthier than sodas, it is recommended not to consume too many of them when monitoring your weight or blood sugar levels. An American study published in Jama Pediatrics showed that drinking a glass of 100% pure fruit juice per day causes weight gain, particularly in children. The ideal: favor the consumption of whole fruits which provide a greater feeling of fullness and which contain even more fiber.

If you are a fan of juices and smoothies, favor homemade preparations and if possible add a dose of vegetable to lower their sugar content. You can, for example, add spinach to a kiwi and banana smoothie, or add celery to an apple fruit juice. This will not change the taste of your drink and will, on the contrary, give it an extra touch of freshness.
