Tic et Tac on Disney+: mixing animation and live action, “it was like shooting two different films”

Director Akiva Schaffer, whose film “Tick and Tac: Rangers of Risk” is now available on Disney +, returned for us to the difficulties of creating a world mixing animation and live action.

AlloCiné: How did you come up with the idea of relaunching the adventures of Tic et Tac?

Akiva Schaffer (director of the film Tic et Tac: Les Rangers du risque): I grew up with the television series of the 90s. I also loved the adventures of La Bande à Picsou. In 2018, Disney sent me a script that was very similar to the one we shot.

I was intrigued by the idea that Tic and Tac have been separated for thirty years. I wanted them to experience new adventures and so this time they are looking for a friend who has disappeared in a live-action world like in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?.

What was your approach to reinventing these two characters?

I think you’re going to love this angry but adorable couple formed by Tic and Tac. It’s a duet that reminds me of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau in the film Funny couple. Fans of both characters will find themselves there and will feel like they are on familiar ground. Also, I think the mix with the real world makes the movie more interesting.

Technically, it was a real challenge for me to juggle the animation part and the live-action part. It was like making two different films at the same time! I believe we managed to make a film that will surprise you, both visually and creatively. Not to mention that we have funny cameos in this film, like for example Roger Rabbit.

Did you try to tackle a particular theme with this family entertainment film?

This is a film that will above all make you have a good time. But you can also see in it the message that friendship is the most important thing there is, beyond personal interests. My goal with this film is to entertain you and make you forget the negative aspects of the world in which we live. I hope we succeeded.
