Too few e-cars in Germany: an important plan is in danger of failing

In Germany, there are too few e-cars to still be able to achieve the self-imposed climate target for 2030. This is the conclusion of a new study. Now more speed and better measures are required to close the gap.

Study: climate target is missed for e-cars

By the year 2030 in Germany 15 million electric cars be on the streets. This is what the new government of SPD, Greens and FDP envisages. However, according to an analysis by the Wuppertal Institute commissioned by Greenpeace, the plan threatens to fall short if new measures are not taken now.

It is said that the climate target for German car traffic would be missed by a full five million vehicles. Instead of 15, there must be 20 million electric cars. Traffic currently accounts for almost 20 percent of all CO2 emissions in Germany, two-thirds of them from cars.

The study refers to data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority. According to them, there is currently around 650,000 purely electric cars in Germany. A total of 48 million cars drive on German roads.

The actions required include: earlier ban on new registrations of cars with conventional petrol and diesel engines. This should take effect as early as 2025 in order to ensure more speed in the production of electric cars. A motor vehicle tax reform could also ensure that car buyers are more likely to opt for an electric variant in the near future. A new registration tax could help for CO2-intensive cars. If 15 million e-cars are on the road in Germany by 2030, then car traffic as a whole 64 million tons of CO2 cause. According to the new government’s climate protection law, the maximum is 52 million tons.
