Seehofer values Scholz
In an interview, Federal Interior Minister Seehofer emphasized that he had a lot of confidence in Olaf Scholz. He justifies this mainly with a certain quality of Scholz – and also reveals why he does not want to appear as an “old white man”.
According to Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, Olaf Scholz has certain abilities to become a good chancellor according to his taste. When asked whether he would trust him to do the job, the CSU politician told “Bild am Sonntag”: “Yes. I know Olaf Scholz very well and have worked with him as finance minister in the cabinet. Despite all the political differences, Mr. Scholz is one of them the politicians, whom I appreciate very much because of their seriousness. Seriousness in politics is essential, also for security in the country. “
Seehofer said this in the context of an interview in which it was primarily about immigration, refugee flows and border protection – especially in the direction of Poland and Belarus. Seehofer said: “It is legitimate for us to protect the external border in such a way that undetected border crossings at the green border are prevented.” Then the reporters asked him: “The next Chancellor will be Olaf Scholz from the SPD. Do you trust him to do this?”
When asked later, Seehofer said that he would also have trusted Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet. “Due to the disagreement in the Union, however, we stood in our own way.” He warned the Union to develop new ideas in the opposition. “In any case, I as a Union would not rely on the fragile tectonics of the three coalition partners in the traffic light. We have to oppose with good ideas and not with generalities. It does not help to always warn of a slide to the left.”
Seehofer does not want to get himself involved in this process: “I will continue to cultivate my political contacts from a human point of view. But not in public,” said Seehofer. “I don’t want to appear as an old white man who knows everything better.” The Bavarian ex-prime minister has announced that he will soon withdraw from politics.
