Abbott’s factory, which recently closed twice, worsening a shortage of infant formula in the United States, reopened on July 1, she confirmed to AFP on Saturday. The factory in Sturgis, Michigan (north), had closed for several months after a recall of products suspected of having caused the death of two infants.
Production resumed in early June, then was halted again in mid-June due to flooding, again delaying deliveries of its hypoallergenic milk brand EleCare.
The previous shutdown had aggravated the shortage of certain brands of infant milk caused by supply and labor problems linked to Covid-19.
To deal with the shortage, the Biden administration, accused of having reacted too late, set up a form of airlift to bring in tons of baby milk produced abroad by military planes.
