ON THE RISE – In Nancy, the municipality has doubled the price of parking fines in certain areas, while the city was one of the cheapest in France. Now, some motorists encountered by the 13H TF1 plan to pay more for the parking meter.

Under the watchful eye of the TF1 1 p.m. camera, a motorist has just taken a parking fine, and the bill could be steep. Because in Nancy, the price of PV will double, from 15 to 30 euros.

“It is already difficult to come to the city center. So I will perhaps come even less often. It will be a deterrent, I think”, she explains in the report at the top of this article.

In the city center, on the public highway, parking costs 1.70 euros per hour. And not paying is more and more risky because of the rising fine. “I will pay”, therefore assures a driver, emphasizing the increase. Another abounds: “Already before, I didn’t really want to run the risk. But there, indeed, I will no longer do it. It doesn’t make you want to come to the city center anymore”.

Other motorists, on the other hand, still plan to take a chance. “Because I have it for 5 minutes. I take the risk”, explains one of them.

If the municipality voted to increase the post-parking fee, it is precisely to deter bad payers, too numerous, we are told.

“In Nancy, only 35% of motorists, roughly, paid their parking meter. In cities of comparable size, it is more like 60 or 70%”, underlines Thomas Souverain, deputy mayor delegate, in charge of the public domain. And to add that “the car is no less welcome [à Nancy]. We all know we need our car from time to time. We, what we do, is the hunt for incivility “.

The traders, for their part, are not against solutions such as the development of covered parking lots and public transport. But they hope that with the increase in fines, motorists will not be discouraged from coming to the city center.

“Of course, we are told that we do not want to chase the car, but these little signs mean that at some point, we need to be reassured. We still have a dynamic city center, but we have to be vigilant”, reacts Nicolas Génot, president of the association of traders Les vitrines de Nancy.

The new parking fine rate will be applied in the coming weeks. The town hall, she assures that the controls have already been strengthened.
