/ Mom / Baby / Coronavirus: what is the follow-up for newborns?

In the current health context, patient monitoring had to be readjusted to limit the spread of Covid-19 as best as possible. But how is the follow-up of mothers and babies after birth?

First of all, it is important to remember that the rules vary according to each maternity. So, some maternities accept papa's presence in the delivery room, others do not. During this period of health crisis, mothers who give birth are quicker to come home, provided that the baby and the mother are well. Regarding postnatal follow-up, it is well maintained with face-to-face appointments for parents with the baby in most maternity hospitals, except in certain territories where consultations are carried out by teleconsultation for lack of midwives.
Thus, face-to-face consultations are carried out under strict health and safety conditions, in the following cases:

  • Maternity discharge examination in the event of early discharge
  • Examination of the newborn at 6-10 days
  • Any consultation for a newborn whatever the reason
  • The first month's exam
  • Examinations with vaccination: 2 months / 4 months / 5 months / 11 months / 12 months / 16 months
  • All other consultations by decision of the pediatrician after teleconsultation
  • Any child whose parents do not have the possibility of teleconsultation

Consultations that remain tailored to your needs

Please note, all the vaccines mentioned are mandatory for the baby. "Optionally, the third month face-to-face consultations can be done by teleconsultation, if the doctor allows and provided that the pediatrician has already received the parents and the baby in consultations the first months. ", emphasizes Dr. F. Cahn-Sellem. " At this point, it will be possible to make an appointment in front of the screen because we know the family, the background and it will be possible to answer the main questions. ", she concludes.

In the event of an appointment by teleconsultation, some may be renewed for face-to-face consultation, according to the doctor's opinion and the patient's condition :

  • Any with acute affection (fever, cough, pain, rash, unusual symptomatology …) • Any chronic pathology requiring control or renewal of treatment
  • Any behavioral concern and psychological problem
  • Any advice on nutrition, parenting, etc.

However, in case of doubt, fever, pain, excessive crying, do not hesitate to contact your doctor who will decide on the type of consultation to favor. "We must exercise the same surveillance, we must continue to have quality medicine in compliance with strict health and safety conditions", recalls Dr F. Cahn-Sellem.
