Windjammers 2: The creation of the game told in a documentary


If you had told Neo-Geo fans ten years ago that they would be playing a new Windjammers in 2022, they certainly wouldn’t have believed you. Yet that is well and truly what will happen at the end of the month, almost 30 years after the release of the original episode. To mark the occasion, DotEmu wanted to immortalize the creation of this made in France suite.

DotEmu has just uploaded a documentary retracing the development of Windjammers 2. In the latter, various members of the French publisher’s team review what led them to work on the Windjammers license as well as the difficulties encountered in obtaining the rights related to the use of the mark.

Windjammers 2 from A to Z

This documentary also has the particularity of having been shot throughout the development of Windjammers 2. It allows us to see the game at different levels of development. Images of the first prototype of the title are for example unveiled here.

For those interested in game development, this documentary also looks at various elements such as the choice of engine, the tools used or the choices of game design.

A documentary witness to a real handover

Lovers of Japanese video games will be able to discover the testimonies of the members of the original Windjammers team. Tomo Adachi, the game designer of the first Windjammers, is one of the speakers in this documentary. And he is not the only one to speak here.

Note that for the video sequences in English or Japanese, French subtitles can be activated on YouTube. As a reminder, the release of Windjammers 2 is now imminent. It is indeed on January 20 that the game will land on PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC. Like Streets of Rage 4, the game will be available on Xbox Game Pass (console and PC) upon release.
