In the morning our digestion is not yet in full swing. That is why it is important what we eat for breakfast – and what is better not to. These foods should be avoided on an empty stomach.

Whether breakfast is really the most important meal is debatable. Opinions also differ about what the perfect breakfast looks like. Some like to eat muesli or porridge, others prefer a classic bread or something warm. However, there are some foods that are not well tolerated on an empty stomach and with which we can quickly overwhelm our digestion. That’s why we shouldn’t eat these first thing in the morning.

6 foods that are not well tolerated on an empty stomach

1. Yeast pastries

Do you like breakfast with sweet Danish pastries or croissants? You’re doing your health a disservice. Because not only are such yeast pastries full of fat and sugar, yeast is also difficult to digest. On an empty stomach, this can cause indigestion such as gas.

2. yogurt

Yogurt is a popular breakfast base – often combined with fruit or muesli. Basically yogurt is very beneficial for digestion because it contains healthy lactic acid bacteria. However, our empty stomach cannot absorb them well because the aggressive stomach acid kills the good bacteria. Yoghurt is therefore easier to digest if we have eaten something else beforehand.

3. Citrus fruits

Oranges, mandarins and grapefruits are high in acid, which can cause stomach problems and heartburn. We should therefore eat citrus fruits later in the day so as not to overwhelm the gastric mucosa and esophagus.

4. Raw vegetables

Raw food contains a lot of healthy nutrients – but it is also not that easy to digest. In the morning, when we haven’t eaten, our digestion warms up first. If we put raw vegetables in front of our gastrointestinal tract right from the start, we make its work unnecessarily difficult. Flatulence or stomach pain can result. So we should rather eat raw vegetables later – or steam or cook the vegetables to make it easier for our digestion.

5. Sweet + sugar-rich fruit

Start the day with something sweet? D rather not. Because chocolate and Co. quickly raise the blood sugar level – and then let it drop again just as quickly. The consequences: hunger pangs. The risk of diabetes also increases when we eat a lot of sweet things.

Incidentally, this also applies to very high-sugar fruit. Because bananas, dates, cherries and Co. also increase the insulin level with their high sugar content. So in the morning you should rather eat fruits with little sugar.

6. Black coffee

Coffee can severely attack the stomach lining and disrupt digestion. The roast substances in coffee stimulate the formation of stomach acid, which can lead to heartburn, among other things. Coffee also greatly increases the sugar content in the blood. Our body has problems regulating this rapid increase. As with sweets, food cravings can follow.
