Horror trip in northern Italy! In the middle of a tunnel near Lake Como, a coach with 25 children on board caught fire on Tuesday morning. The youngsters, between 14 and 16 years old, are on their way to Livigno for a summer camp.
Shortly after entering the tunnel, driver Mauro Mascetti (48) notices that something is wrong: “When I saw the fire, I only thought of saving the children. That was my top priority at the moment, ”the driver told the newspaper“ Il Messagero ”.
No injuries
Mascetti immediately leads the young people away from the burning bus into a safety tunnel. Then he tried to put out the fire. “But it quickly became clear to me that there was nothing more I could do.” The fire brigade is out immediately with a large contingent, but the situation is hopeless. The bus burns out completely. The photos showed the completely burned-out bus, surrounded by extinguishing foam.
Thanks to the heroic intervention of the bus driver, nobody is injured in a full fire. The tour group is evacuated from the safety tunnel. Five children have to go to the hospital for a check-up, but are discharged a little later.

From those responsible in the region, there is only praise after the rescue operation. For Mascetti himself, however, it is clear: “I have only done my duty.”
Bus accidents do not always end as lightly as in northern Italy. In 2012, a coach with Belgian school children on board crashed into a tunnel wall in Valais. 22 children and 6 adults died. (zis)
