Bambi: why are hunters never visible on screen?

On the occasion of the broadcast of the cult animated film Bambi on Saturday, December 25, 2021, from 9:05 p.m. on M6, Télé Star explains why no hunter is ever visible on the screen in this great classic from the Disney studios.

Released in theaters in 1942, the cult animated film Bambi, produced by Disney Studios, will be rebroadcast on Saturday, December 25, 2021, from 9:05 p.m. on M6. This cartoon, known to be the 5th “classic animation“from Walt Disney, is in fact the film adaptation of the novel by Felix Salten, Bambi, the story of a life in the woods, released in 1923. In this film, Bambi, a newborn fawn, learns, during his walks, a thousand and one things which are for him so many sources of wonder. From summer to autumn, he thus discovers the seasons one by one and faces winter for the very first time.

It was in 1935 that Walt Disney began the project to adapt this work on the big screen, either just after the start of production of his first animated feature film : Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. However, due to various setbacks, the production of the film is delayed several times. Pinocchio, Fantasia and Dumbo have been released in theaters before Bambi. Despite or thanks to it, Bambi offers indisputable graphic quality, presenting in particular very realistic sets and characters. Among the different characters in the film, hunters never appear on screen, while their presence is often palpable.

Bambi: the film’s premiere canceled in the US because of the hunters

In fact, during the production of Bambi, footage showing hunters killing an animal of the forest had been projected in front of 400 people as a test. Following the shocked reactions of the spectators, Walt Disney resolved to dispense with the stage, and the presence of hunters in general. However, this did not prevent the production from dreading controversy among hunting enthusiasts. As proof, the great world premiere of the film was initially to take place at the Lincoln Theater, located in Damariscotta in the State of Maine. But for fear of possible demonstrations on the part of local hunters, the screening was canceled., and the premiere finally took place in London.
