On June 23, a maternal and child protection doctor made an overdose error when injecting a 3-month-old baby with a tuberculosis vaccine. The child’s parents decided to file a complaint.
The parents of little Haiya, a three-month-old baby at the time, decided not to let this medical error. The facts date back to June 23 in the Ardennes. While the little family goes to an appointment at a PMI (Protection Maternal and Childhood) center near their home to vaccinate Haiya, the doctor who receives them makes a mistake in the dosage of a vaccinethe BCG. A recommended vaccine against tuberculosis, an infectious disease, which has not been compulsory since 2007.
The doctor would have injected 20 times the dose indicated for the age of the childreport our colleagues from The union after questioning the mother. Concretely, the young baby would have received approximately 1 ml of the product against the recommended 0.05 ml. Very quickly, the health professional realized his mistake, but it was already too late. By reflex but above all out of fear, the parents of little Haïya immediately went to the emergency room. The doctor had given them two documents attesting to his error.
What consequences for the baby?
Once there, at the hospital, after examining the child, the doctors were unable to precisely determine the exact quantity of the vaccine injected. No treatment therefore could not be given to the baby. A professor of immunology nevertheless assured that this overdose was not not dangerous. And that the child should not have sequelae.
However, as a precaution, the medical team asked the parents to closely monitor their little girl and her state of health for several weeks. In particular, they had to be careful that no abscess formed at the site of the injection. In response to this medical error, Haïya’s parents decided to file a complaint against the doctor in question.
